Physical Education
INTENT
We aim to inspire and engage all children and for each child to fulfil their potential. We want the children’s experience of PE to be positive and motivating. We aim to immerse the children in a physically active culture which inspires an active generation who enjoy being physically active and want to try and succeed in a variety of physical activities and sports. Through physical education lessons children are reminded of our school values (inclusive, caring, resilient, honest, creative, unique and ambitious) and how these values can support their physical development.
We aim for our children to:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- be physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives
EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
Our children will:
- Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others and begin to regulate their behaviour accordingly.
- Give focused attention to what the teacher says, responding appropriately even when engaged in activity, and show an ability to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions.
- Be confident to try new activities and show independence, resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge
- Explain the reasons for rules, know right from wrong and try to behave accordingly
- Work and play co-operatively and take turns with others
- Show sensitivity to their own and to others’ needs
Physical Development Early Learning Goal:
- Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others
- Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing
- Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing
IN KEY STAGE 1
Our children develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They are able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
IN KEY STAGE 2
Our pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
IMPLEMENTATION
PE at The Icknield Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, dance, yoga, gymnastics, net and wall games, athletics, outdoor adventurous activity, swimming and striking and fielding games. The curriculum map sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- Teachers use and adapt GetSet4PE to ensure planning, content and delivery is age appropriate. This scheme ensures lessons are progressive.
- In years 4, 5 and 6 children receive half an hour swimming lessons per week for a term.
- Pupils participate in two one-hour high quality PE lessons each week.
- Each unit is linked to one our school values; ambitious, caring, creative, honest, inclusive, resilient and unique.
- Children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities that we offer.
- We facilitate active break and lunch times through play equipment and lunch clubs.
- Play Leaders. Our play leaders are developed into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time clubs, our annual Sports day and any other Sporting activities.
- We promote both participation and competition through P.E and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons or the local area.
- Children participate in workshops/whole school events which covers a variety of sports throughout the year. For example: Balanceability, Scootability, Bikeability, The Big Walk and Wheel. We have an annual inclusive House Sports Day, with the emphasis on participation and achievement for all.
IMPACT
At The Icknield Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive which allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment.
Our children show a willingness and ability to try new sports and activities, push themselves and persevere in light of new challenges. Our children are inspired to have a love of sport and to grow up to have happy and healthy lives; utilising the skills and knowledge they have acquired through PE. Linking values to PE lessons supports children in understanding how PE can contribute to their lives outside of school and it provides an opportunity for students to reflect on and internalise the school’s core values.
