PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)
At The Icknield Primary School, our vision is that every pupil in our school will develop knowledge about how their bodies will grow and change; have an awareness of how to keep themselves safe/protect their own wellbeing in a range of circumstances, such as being online; and also have the confidence to share their views about the world around them and their own changing relationships. Our aim is that every pupil will be able to use this knowledge in the outside world to help guide their decisions in life, supporting their mental, physical and emotional health.
We use Cambridgeshire’s Personal Development Programme (PDP) which includes detailed guidance, lesson plans and resources suggestions for PSHE units targeted at each year group. Although many of our PSHE lessons are taught discretely, we do often teach PSHE in a cross-curricular way, including it in English, Science, RE. It is also regularly covered in assemblies.
Within PSHE, the main topic focuses for each year group are: ‘Citizenship’, ‘Economic Wellbeing,’ ‘Healthy and Safer Lifestyles’ and ‘Myself and My Relationships.’
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Incorporated within Cambridgeshire’s PDP are units around Relationships and Sex Education. Earlier this year, parents were invited into Icknield for a discussion around the changes to the RSE curriculum stemming from new Government publications. Following this meeting, information was communicated to all parents in regard to what RSE education will look like at Icknield from 2024. The specific RSE units will be taught to children during RSE week (this usually takes place in May) and more details about what is taught to each year group can be found in the document entitled, ‘RSE Icknield Parent Carers Letter May 2024’. Further useful resources to can be found at the bottom of this page.
Supporting Your Child
There are many ways to support your children with their PSHE learning. For younger children, you could encourage them to dress and undress independently and manage their own hygiene. Simple activities such as board games will encourage team-work and help your children learn to take turns. With older children, use documentaries and other media to discuss issues around our place and responsibilities in society.
